His works reveal oppressive social and political structures, commenting on some of today’s most pressing issues. Raising questions about constrictions against free speech, Fatmi deconstructs dogmatic religion and ideology along with our society of rampant consumerism. He is particularly interested in the idea of the role of the artist in a society in crisis.
Fatmi compares the exhibition at Göteborgs Konsthall to a book. His work deals with the multifaceted character of the written word – its beauty, violence and fragility. Several of the works in the exhibition integrate Arabic calligraphy, both as language and patterns. The beauty of words, and their power to both bring together and shatter, is consistently present in Fatmi’s practice.
Guided tours every Saturday at 13.00.
