Watercolour and drawing at the Nordic Watercolour museum in Skärhamn. Works by two of Denmark’s most significant artists, Asger Jorn and Per Kirkeby, will be on display from 10 May to 6 September 2026. During the summer, a selection from the museum’s own collection will also be presented.

Asger Jorn and Per Kirkeby are two of Denmark’s most influential post‑war artists. By focusing on watercolour and drawing, the exhibition at the Nordic Watercolour museum highlights experimental aspects of their artistic practices. In these media, process, movement and thought emerge as independent fields of exploration, where the energy, structure and rhythm of the image could be tested and deepened.

The selection includes works from key periods, ranging from Jorn’s spontaneous and experimental visual language of the 1940s to Kirkeby’s works from the 1980s and 1990s. The exhibition explores how, in different yet closely related ways, both artists combined intellectual rigour with emotional intensity in their image‑making during a time marked by profound change. Despite belonging to different generations, their works are united by a shared interest in painting’s search for its inner magic.

The exhibition runs from 10 May to 6 September 2026 and has been developed in collaboration with art historian Per Jonas Storsve.

Alongside the main exhibition featuring Asger Jorn and Per Kirkeby, a selection from the museum’s permanent collection will also be shown.
