André and Dorine have lived together for many years, and their love has slipped into routine. Like many other couples, the two aging artists have begun to take each other for granted, and a certain indifference has settled in. But when a serious illness enters their lives, everything changes. Suddenly it becomes important to remember, recreate, and relive the love that has bound them together through all these years. With the help of different masks, three actors bring fifteen characters to life on stage. There is no spoken dialogue, yet there is never any doubt about what is happening between the two elderly partners.
André & Dorine is a story about love and forgetfulness. It is a poignant portrayal of both lifelong companionship and the human need to keep one’s memories alive. The performance is also a heartwarming tribute to the theatre’s ability to portray the most intimate bonds between people. Their everyday life and the challenges brought on by dementia are depicted with impeccable timing. No one can misunderstand either the plot or the psychology, despite the absence of words. The comic moments land perfectly, but the laughter catches in your throat.
Kulunka Teatro was founded in 2010 in the Basque Country. André & Dorine is the company’s first production, and it continues to tour 13 years after its premiere.
