What is identity? How does one define it for themselves? What factors may have influenced or affected how one defines or identifies themselves? From birth, we are met with various impressions by those around us that have a lasting influence on what we know to be our truth and reality. During our growth from childhood to adulthood, we internalize these influences and identity becomes a casualty of the intersectionality between the story we want to tell about ourselves and the story others impose on us.
As we seek to establish our individual uniqueness, we continually ask ourselves questions like: Am I tall enough? Am I thin enough? Am I muscular enough? Am I pretty enough? Do I look young enough? Do I make enough money? Am I successful enough? Did I get enough likes? These questions echo within our psyche as we search within ourselves and work to define our identity within the frame of comparing ourselves to the standards of others, and by how we receive their gaze for approval, acceptance, validation and worthiness as a member of society.
ENOUGH. explores these complexities surrounding identity while navigating social metric frames such as age, beauty, body image, masculinity/femininity, popularity, and success. It asks the question, “Can we break free of these social conditioned metrics and (re)define identity for ourselves – can we truly ever be enough?
Please note: There will be a moment of requested audience interaction. The work is performed in English.
