Musicians from the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra join in for an effervescent chamber music programme during Advent. Works by Mozart and Beethoven demonstrate the development of the classical form from elegance and clarity to music in a larger format characterised by expansive and dramatic expressiveness.
Mozart’s Oboe Quartet from 1781 combines virtuosity with beautiful dialogue, and the oboe is given a lyrical and technically demanding role. String Quartet No. 14 in G Major, also known as the “Spring quartet”, is the first of Mozart’s six so-called Haydn quartets. It is known for its blend of various Baroque elements and the galant style of Classicism.
Beethoven’s three string trios mark his breakthrough as a chamber music composer at just 28 years of age. In the dramatic Trio in C Minor and the lighter Trio in G Major, he is already stretching the classical form and gesturing to the breakthrough of the string quartet and romantic style.
This warm evening offers a close encounter with the greatest icons of classical music.
