Love, abuse of power, deadly revenge and immortal music. Verdi’s intense drama Rigoletto is a masterpiece from beginning to end.

Opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi (1813–1901). Libretto by Francesco Maria Piave based on the drama by Victor Hugo.

As a hated lackey of the ruling elite, Rigoletto moves between society’s eccentric, glamorous heights and its sordid underworld. Rigoletto’s aim in life is to (over)protect his daughter Gilda from the evils of the world. But Gilda wants to live her life to the fullest and falls hopelessly in love with the philandering Duke of Mantua. The Duke’s omnipotence stands against Rigoletto’s powerlessness, Gilda’s joy for life against her father’s despair. Rigoletto soon has no option but to make a fateful decision.

Verdi masterfully portrays his psychological insights through the music, while German director David Bösch takes a heartfelt look at the people and their dramas. His ingeniously production highlights the human drama in a ruthless world.

The title role is performed by David Kempster and Ólafur Sigurdarson, the daughter Gilda is sung by Ida Falk Winland and her lover the Duke of Mantua (with the aria ”La donna è mobile”) is performed by Davide Giusti. On the conductor’s podium is Francesco Angelico, Music Director at the Staatstheater Kassel and a frequent guest conductor at leading international opera houses.
