Canadian pianist Bruce Liu won the international Chopin Competition in 2021. Tonight, Rachmaninoff’s challenging variations on Paganini’s well-known theme are on the menu. Tempo and drama are guaranteed!

Niccolò Paganini was an unparalleled violinist and superstar whom everyone wanted to hear. Numerous composers have been inspired by the short pieces of his 24 Caprices. Sergei Rachmaninoff’s romantic variations on Paganini’s theme push the boundaries and are based on a close collaboration with the orchestra.

As an introduction, we hear Swedish Benjamin Staern’s dazzling orchestral work Jubilate from 2009. It contains all the celebration, drama and victory of a football stadium.

The evening also concludes with drama in Carl Nielsen’s Symphony No. 2.  “The Four Temperaments” present an entire range of the human psyche.
