From underground to a world-class symphonic sound. The Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra takes on the melodious death metal that has put Gothenburg on the rock map forever. Riffs become fiery string passages and thrilling percussion in iconic songs from At The Gates, Dark Tranquillity and In Flames. No amplified guitars, no growling vocals – but even more power in the full winds, strings and percussion opening gates to surprising new dimensions.

Led by conductor Josef Rhedin, we get to experience key works from the three bands in specially written arrangements by Johan Lindström and composer John Metcalfe. Metcalfe is known for his work with artists including U2, Coldplay and Peter Gabriel.

Even those who have never set foot in a hard rock concert will find something to connect to in this melodic world. Much of the Gothenburg sound is adjacent to Swedish folk and traditional classical music – with a clear sense of sorrow, long melodies and a varied style combining raw and sweet elements.

“Hearing our music, together with songs from Dark Tranquillity and In Flames, translated for full orchestra is something we never could have imagined when this all began.” – At the Gates

This concert is also a warm tribute in memory of Tomas “Tompa” Lindberg. As frontman of At The Gates, Lindberg was one of the most important individuals behind the Gothenburg sound.

Conductor Josef Rhedin moves comfortably between musicals, opera and symphonic music and has worked with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and the Malmö Symphony Orchestra, as well as Robyn and Helen Sjöholm.

This is the concert for anyone who is curious about Gothenburg’s modern music legacy. Two of the city’s most important musical exports meet here: hard rock and the Gothenburg Symphony, opening the doors to anyone who wants to step inside.
