The ocean covers more than 70 percent of the Earth’s surface and hosts a rich and diverse array of life, yet much of it remains hidden from us humans. Most of us will never encounter these animals in their true environment. Many live at depths we cannot reach, others blend into their surroundings or reveal themselves only to those who take the time to really look. Those who dare to dive down.
In this exhibition, you are invited to glimpse life beneath the surface at the Swedish West Coast. Here you will encounter both familiar and lesser-known species; curious, fragile, strange, and beautiful. Those that still remain in a time when many others have disappeared due to overfishing and changes in environment and climate.
The more we learn about the hidden inhabitants of the sea, the stronger our connection becomes to those who live there. Creatures worth discovering and protecting. Perhaps these encounters among the photographs will spark a curiosity that lingers on, long after you have returned to the surface?
About the photographers – the Swedish Society of Underwater Photography
The photographs in this exhibition were taken by members of the Swedish Society of Underwater Photography, SfU. With water above their heads, they dive beneath the surface at the Swedish West Coast and encounter a world otherwise rarely seen.
With the help of the camera, the photographers capture the colours, shapes, and moments that await below the surface. The images are intended to spark curiosity, inspire reflection, and convey knowledge, while also fostering respect and humility before the unique and vibrant marine environment of the Swedish West Coast.
