About the Book

Women Behind the Camera: 1848–1968 is a photographic biography charting the history of professional women photographers in Sweden. It tells the story of how, early on, photography became a female profession, and how women across the country established themselves as entrepreneurs, running their own studios and forging careers through the camera lens. It is also the first comprehensive account to highlight the vital role women have played in Swedish photography.

The book is the result of many years of research conducted by photographic historian and honorary doctor Eva Dahlman, literary historian and critic Magnus Bremmer, and photographic historian Björn Axel Johansson. It was awarded the Hasselblad Foundation Photobook Grant in 2020.
