Stretching for 860 metres, Avenyn links two key points in the city: from Kungsbron and Vallgraven in the north to Götaplatsen in the south. Along the way you’ll find classic cafés, nightclubs, hotels, cinemas and some of the city’s major cultural venues. It’s often said that you don’t come to Gothenburg for Avenyn – but few people leave without having been here.

From grand boulevard to popular lively urban hub
Avenyn is the result of Sweden’s first urban planning competition, announced in 1861. The ambition was clear from the outset: Gothenburg was to gain a representative grand boulevard. Originally, the impressive buildings even had small, green front gardens.
Avenyn quickly became a promenade for the city’s social elite. People strolled along the linden-lined avenue, in new hats and carefully chosen Sunday clothes. Shopping in the modern sense was long considered inappropriate here. Stora Teatern, inaugurated as early as 1859, was the first building on Avenyn and set a cultural tone from the start.

Götaplatsen – Avenyn’s crown jewel
As Gothenburg approached its 300th anniversary in 1923, Avenyn was given a monumental ending. The area around what is now Götaplatsen developed into a cultural centre, with the Gothenburg Museum of Art and Göteborgs Konsthall built in Nordic Classicist style.
In the 1930s, Gothenburg Concert Hall, Gothenburg City Theatre and the Poseidon Fountain were added – featuring Carl Milles’ monumental sculpture of the sea god Poseidon, which became one of the city’s most iconic landmarks.

Today, Götaplatsen is used just as much for major cultural events, public gatherings, informal meetings and lunch breaks spent on the steps.

Cinemas, cafés and nightlife
In the 1950s, Avenyn developed into a modern shopping street, and during the 1970s many older buildings were demolished to make way for hotels, banks, department stores and offices. The front gardens largely disappeared and were incorporated into the pavements, which is why the sidewalks along Avenyn are up to 15 metres wide. One preserved example can still be seen at Kungsportsavenyen 1.

At the same time, the nightlife grew. Inspired by London, Avenyn developed during the 1970s and 1980s into a centre for restaurants, nightclubs and late opening hours. Even today, the street often serves as the final destination for those who started their evening on the Långgatorna or in Vasastan.
Teatergatan – Avenyn’s dining scene to the side

Running parallel to Avenyn are several notable side streets, including Teatergatan, which today is one of Gothenburg’s densest and most international restaurant stretches. On short distances, you’ll find cuisines and expressions ranging from Italy and Hawaii to New York, Spain and modern Nordic interpretations – making Teatergatan a destination in its own right.
