Idun Baltzersen at Nevven Gallery.

Vasastaden, the city centre and Lorensberg

In Vasastaden there are galleries everywhere you look and during weekends it’s almost impossible to open a door without finding yourself at an opening party. Galleri Backlund and Galleri Engleson are two of the most prominent galleries in the area.

Galleri Hammarén, on Aschebergsgatan 19, is focusing on Swedish artists, and collaborates with famous painters like Lena Cronqvist, Ann Edholm, Ernst Billgren and Charlotte Gyllenhammar.

Nevven Gallery focuses primarily on international contemporary painting, sculpture and photography. The gallery has a program featuring a selection of some of the best uprising and mid-career artists from Europe and North America, along with some of the most interesting Scandinavian artists.

Galleri Résistance, which you’ll find on the street Stora Badhusgatan, proposes a place where artists active in Gothenburg can meet and collaborate. The gallery is based on collaboration and co-organization. The gallery supports artists at different stages of their careers and brings them together in a common space.

Miva Fine Art on Korsgatan offers contemporary pop art.

Grafik i Väst, Storgatan 20, is a non-profit association and gallery for print makers. The gallery houses an impressive bank of some 4000 edition prints.

Next to the cathedral Domkyrkan you’ll find Miva Fine Art, that specialises in international and national pop art and offers painting, sculpture, photography and contemporary art.

Konstepidemin is a colourful home to over one hundred artists.

Andra Långgatan, Haga and Linnéstaden

The area around Andra Långgatan, Linnégatan and the square Järntorget is crowded with bars, restaurants, cafés and galleries.

If you’re interested in jewellery and design, make sure to visit Gallery Four in the Linné neighbourhood. They also show temporary exhibitions. Sintra is a shop and gallery in Haga owned by local artists and craftsmen. Students from the School of Design and Crafts often have exhibitions here.

Galleri PS can be found at Kaponjärgatan 54 in Haga. The gallery’s exhibition program is varied and includes both painting, graphics, sculpture, photography, film and installations by Swedish and international artists. The exhibitions are shown for two weeks.

Konstepidemin, the colourful home of more than a hundred artists, sculptors, ceramics, dancers and more, is situated just up the hill from Linnéplatsen. There are four galleries in the area and always something well worth seeing.

Galleri 54, on Kastellgatan 7, is run by professional artists and has been showing resonating artworks since 1959. On the same street, at number 10, is Galleri Box, also an artist-run gallery with a focus on contemporary art.

In the corner of the streets Nordhemsgatan and Andra långgatan, is Galleri Magnus Winström, which is a gallery to keep an eye on if you are interested in what is going on in Gothenburg’s art scene.

Gothenburg Art Society, Göteborgs Konstförening was established in 1854 with the vision to promote art in the city and has continued to do so until the present day. The gallery at Kastellgatan 9 show sculpture, painting, drawing, design, photography, installations and more.

Klippan and Majorna

The neighbourhood Majorna is full of cosy cafés and excellent second hand shops, but there’s also a lot of artist’s workshops and studios. One of the most prominent off-centre galleries, Röda Sten, is located here. In a three-storey brick cube just a stone’s throw away from the sea you will find installations, paintings, video art and all kinds of interesting performances from Swedish as well as international artists.

A stone’s throw from Röda Sten, you’ll find Sockerbruket, home to both Galleri Thomassen and 3:dje Våningen. Galleri Thomassen, founded in 1990, represents both up-and-coming and established artists. 3:dje Våningen primarily focuses on contemporary dance and choreography, but its 600-square-metre premises also provide space for exhibitions, concerts, performances, and much more. Galleri PS can now also be found in Sockerbruket. The gallery’s exhibition programme is varied, featuring painting, graphics, sculpture, photography, film, and installations by Swedish and international artists.

Göteborgs Konstnärsklubb have their own gallery, Galleri Majnabbe, located inside one of Gothenburg’s oldest cultural buildings, Kustens Hus. They put on around 10 exhibitions each year, ranging from tradtidional art to avant-garde. You’ll also be able to enjoy a spectacular view of the river Göta älv and the bridge Älvsborgsbron.
