Cafes

The ongoing conversations around you. The smell of freshly baked bread. The clatter of cups hitting the plates and chairs being pulled on the floor. To always be where things happen make many feel calm.

Cafes are popular places for work, whether it’s about writing your thesis, answering emails or creating the perfect marketing campaign. In Gothenburg, there are many cafes in which you can let your mind work and get your job done. Below we give you some tips.

Viktors kaffe, next to the main boulevard Kungsportsavenyen, is a popular spot for work and study.

Viktors kaffe

Coffee, pastries and lunch. At Viktors kaffe you can find a variety of stuff for your workday. Choose between sitting in the cosy café or enjoy the lovely outdoor seating area. But don’t enjoy too much of the sun, remember to still do your job.

Alkemisten kaffebar

Tired of machine coffee from work? Maybe a good cup of organic coffee and locally produced fika at Hisingen will do better? At Alkemisten kaffebar you will be served coffee with love. Get yourself to Kvillebäcken, bring your laptop and step into the perfect cafe world.

Brogyllen

In this classic cafe located close to Antikhallarna and Domkyrkan church you have plenty of space to sit. Bring your laptop, look at all the customers coming and going, watch the trams drive past the window and the canal, running towards the Göte älv river. Let this day be more than just a regular working day.

Espresso house

Espresso house is a true classic. Here, you’ll find many people with laptops, no matter in which of the places you go to. The café chain has almost 20 cafes around Gothenburg, so there’s a chance one is located near you.

Hotels

Sitting in a hotel lobby could be pleasant even though you don’t work. Watching visitors coming and going, thinking about what they will do during the day – or you concentrate on your work in an open and light environment with the right amount of people and the right amount of noise.

Radisson Blu Scandinavia

At Radisson Blu Scandinavia, you can sit in an open, bright and inviting room adjacent to the lobby. Enjoy the silence and focus on what you do best. Here you have plenty of space and close to most lunch restaurants when it’s time for a break.

Scandic Opalen

Scandic Opalen also has nice spots to work from. When it’s time for lunch you don’t really have to walk that far. Just a few metres away there’s a great buffé. At Scandic Opalen you are close to most things in the city, and usually you do not have too many people around you either.

Hotel Flora

At this boutique hotel in the city centre you’ll find Flora Hotel Workplace – a bookable meeting place where you have the chance to work in private or with other people. When booking a day here you get to eat their breakfast for the whole day as well, how good does that sound?

Hôtel Eggers

Step into one of Sweden’s oldest hotels and feel the beating history. Here, royalties, diplomats and businessmen have lived since 1859. Today, the hotel has kept much of its history but at the same time it has brought a modern touch to it. Spend your day working here with lunch, fresh fruit and coffee in a unique environment few hotels in Gothenburg can match.

Hotel Opera

Right across the street from the central station, you’ll find four-star Hotel Opera with plenty of work and study friendly areas. If you get hungry, their restaurant Angelini offers breakfast, lunch and dinner from the Italian and the American kitchen.

Libraries

A guide like this would not be complete if the libraries weren’t here. The silence between bookshelves filled with literature, escaping the constant noise of the city, this silent oasis can be what many people need to be able to think properly.

Here, you’ll find some of the city libraries around Gothenburg. If you study, you probably already have your favourite library at your university. But we could all need some new places to explore, and there are plenty to choose from.

The Gothenburg City Library

Gothenburg’s largest library is located on Götaplatsen. Here you will find everything you could possibly need from a library. And when you’re ready for lunch, head to Roots Café within the building and enjoy their delicious salads. You also have a number of other lunch restaurants right on your doorstep, on the main boulevard Avenyn.

As a part of the City Library, there is a small city library on Södra Hamngatan with the name Stadsbiblioteket 300 m2.

Kortedala library

If you are close to Kortedala torg square, this library is a good place to work. Here you can alternate your tasks with getting to know the history of Kortedala through a large archive of old newspaper articles. The library is light and airy with a quiet reading room, seating areas and several reading places.

Högsbo library

The library in Högsbo is located on Axel Dahlström’s torg square and, in addition to a quiet and peaceful work environment, the library also offers author events and a music cafe on selected evenings. The library is slightly smaller but is well suited for a day of work.

Örgryte-Härlanda library

In the eastern part of Gothenburg, you will find the Örgryte-Härlanda library, in the Kulturhuset Kåken house. The library has three floors with exhibitions, a café and larger areas suitable for work or reading.
