The history of HDK goes back to the 1800s and since then, much has happened. The university which was originally known as “Slöjdis” in everyday speech, were also pioneers in giving women the opportunity of further education. As from 1876 women were accepted and taught in subjects such as drawing and wood carving.
Today future designers, craftsmen, and art and craft teachers are educated at the academy.
HDK is suitably located next to the Röhsska Museum, the Swedish Museum of Design and Craft.
