From Kayakomat Färjenäs on Hisingen, you can paddle straight into Gothenburg’s maritime history. Follow the river towards the harbour entrance, explore historic paddling routes or set a course for Nya Älvsborg fortress – a trip combining sea, nature and sweeping views without taking you far from the city centre.

Paddle through Gothenburg’s history

Färjenäs lies in the area where Gothenburg first took shape. As well as hiring a kayak, you can therefore pick up suggestions for routes linked to the city’s history. You will find route ideas on a map attached to the kayak and on Kayakomat’s social media channels.

The routes take you through waters where wind, waves and boat traffic can affect conditions. They are therefore best suited to experienced kayakers who feel confident paddling on more exposed water.

One of the main trips leads to Nya Älvsborg fortress, around four kilometres from Färjenäs. The fortress was built in the 17th century to defend Gothenburg against attacks from the sea and remained one of the city’s most important defensive sites for several centuries.

How Kayakomat works

Kayakomat is an unmanned self-service rental station. Book your kayak online and you will receive a personal access code by text message and email before your start time. Use the code to unlock the kayak and equipment at the station. A buoyancy aid, paddle and spray deck are included.

At the end of your rental period, return the kayak and equipment, make sure everything is clean and lock it back into place. A kayak trolley is also available at Färjenäs, making it easier to move the kayak between the station and the water.
