Explore Hälsö on foot or by bike

Hälsö, located in the northern part of the Gothenburg archipelago, offers scenic walks along narrow, winding roads and coastal trails. A 2.5-kilometre exercise path follows the shoreline, perfect for a jog or a leisurely stroll. The island is also ideal to explore by bike.

There are bathing spots along almost the entire coast, many with stunning evening sun. On northern Hälsö, at Stuvö, a rocky hilltop offers panoramic views of the Nordöarna islands, the fortress at Marstrand and the open sea to the west. The islets just off the coast are also popular with kayakers.

Shipbuilding history and ancient remains

The narrow alleys around the old shipyard area tell the story of when Hälsö was one of the most important boatbuilding communities on the West Coast. Everything from fishing boats to large wooden vessels was built here.

You’ll also find ancient remains on the island, including stone circles, foundations and stone enclosures believed to have been used as temporary fishing camps. Many of them are located in the northwest and on the islets around Hälsö and Stuvö.

Seaweed farming

In the waters between Hälsö and Öckerö, seaweed is farmed by Ten Island Seafarm, run by Cassandra Köbbel. The seaweed is harvested once a year and sold to, among others, restaurant Tullhuset on nearby island Hönö.

A guest harbour with all you need

If you’re arriving by boat, Hälsö offers a welcoming guest harbour with space for around 40 boats. Facilities include toilets, showers, laundry, a café, a pétanque court and mini golf.

Don’t miss Hälsö Brygga, where you can enjoy coffee, meals and in summer the occasional live music performance.

Getting to Hälsö

From Göteborg, follow road 155 to the ferry terminal at Lilla Varholmen. From there, take the car ferry across to Hönö. Continue by car or take bus 290 from Hönö to Hälsö.
