Björkö is one of the larger islands in Gothenburg’s northern archipelago, home to around 1,600 residents. The island is rocky, with smooth granite cliffs and family-friendly swimming spots. From the viewpoint at Valeberget, you get sweeping views across the archipelago, from Vinga in the south to Marstrand in the north.

Eat and stay in the marina

At the heart of the island lies the marina. Here, you can enjoy fresh seafood at restaurant Seaside, or cool down with an ice cream from Glassboa. If you’re a fan of craft beer, Barlind Beer is well worth a visit, located in the old icehouse known as Ishuset.

If you’re planning to stay overnight, Björkö Sea Lodge is just a few steps from the waterfront. Fall asleep to the sound of gentle waves and wake up to a view of the sea.

Untouched nature and hiking trails

If you love hiking, Björkö is a must. Until 1999, the island’s northern part was used for military purposes and kept completely free from development. Today, much of the island is made up of untouched nature, with open landscapes and blooming meadows.

Rare herbs and fungi thrive here, thanks to a unique approach where fallen trees are left untouched, creating rich habitats for wildlife.

Getting here

The car ferry from Lilla Varholmen takes about five minutes to reach the southern ferry terminal on Björkö. It runs every 30 minutes between 5 AM and 10 PM, and it’s free of charge.

From Björkö, you can also take a passenger ferry to Kalvsund, Grötö and Öckerö.

Arriving with your own boat? You’re welcome to dock in the island’s pleasant guest marina.
