The city of Gothenburg was founded by King Gustav II Adolf in 1621. A church was built on the same ground as where the cathedral stands today. The church was dedicated in 1633 and named Gustavi kyrka after the king who, in the previous year, had fell in the battle of Lützen. It got its status as cathedral in 1665 and was then renamed Gustavi Domkyrka, called Göteborgs Domkyrka.
