Remarkably little has changed inside Nääs Castle since 1898 – and that is exactly the point. Join a guided tour through 23 rooms and the kitchen, hear the story of its last private owner, August Abrahamson, then head out into the park for a walk, fika and views across Lake Sävelången.

Step straight into the 19th century

When August Abrahamson died in 1898, the castle was largely left as it was. Furniture, artworks and personal objects remain in place, creating an unusually complete 19th-century interior. The guided tour takes you through the castle’s three floors and tells the story of Abrahamson and the people who lived and worked at Nääs.

You cannot explore the castle independently. Regular guided tours run during much of the year, with more frequent departures in summer, and advance booking is recommended. Check the Nääs website for current times and tickets.

Fika, crafts and the castle park

There is plenty of reason to linger after the tour. Kaffestugan serves soup lunches, sandwiches and traditional cakes in a historic setting, while Slottsboden sells crafts, vintage finds and Nääs products.

Nääs also has an important place in the history of Swedish craft education. August Abrahamson and Otto Salomon developed a teacher-training college here that attracted participants from around the world. That heritage continues today through courses in crafts, traditional building techniques and conservation.

Around the castle, paths lead through parkland with old trees and open lawns, while the Nääs Ekhagar nature reserve stretches between Nääs and Floda. In other words, there is little reason to schedule your return train too tightly after the tour.

Good to know

The castle has three floors and several long, steep staircases. There is no lift, making much of the building difficult to access by wheelchair. The kitchen level can be reached through a separate entrance with fewer steps.

Getting to Nääs Castle

Nääs is in Floda, around 30 kilometres north-east of Gothenburg. The nearest bus stop is Lilla Nääs and the nearest commuter train station is Floda. By car, follow the E20 towards Alingsås and take the Nääsmotet exit.
