Sport, concerts and international championships

Scandinavium is perhaps best known as the home arena of ice hockey team Frölunda HC. However, it has also hosted a wide range of major international championships and sporting events in handball, athletics and figure skating, as well as the prestigious equestrian competitions at the Gothenburg Horse Show. When it comes to concerts, Scandinavium has welcomed some of the world’s biggest artists over the years, including Whitney Houston, Oasis, ABBA and Justin Timberlake.

Centrally located in Gothenburg’s event district

Scandinavium was inaugurated in 1971 as part of Gothenburg’s 350th anniversary celebrations. The building was designed by Danish-Swedish architect Poul Hultberg, inspired by ancient amphitheatres, and it was initially Northern Europe’s most modern and largest indoor arena for sport, entertainment and culture.

Like the nearby outdoor arena Ullevi, Scandinavium features a distinctive undulating roof and two higher grandstand sections. It is centralley located on the intersection between Skånegatan and Valhallagatan, right in the heart of Gothenburg’s events district.
