Stora Saluhallen [“the Big Market hall”] was designed by architect Hans Hedlund and built between 1888 and 1889. Hedlund also designed many of Gothenburg’s well-known buildings, many of them in the neighbourhood Vasastaden. The market hall was constructed in stone, iron, and glass, and its interior is dominated by an impressive glass ceiling supported by elegant iron arches.

Delicacies and culinary experiences

The generous ceiling height and glass roof of Stora Saluhallen create a bright and open atmosphere, where visitors can wander among around forty shops, bars, and restaurants. Here you’ll find everything from gourmet cheeses, meat, bread, coffee, and chocolate to exotic spices and other fine ingredients with flavours from around the world.

In addition to specialist food shops, the hall is home to several popular restaurants, where you can sit down for lunch, dinner, or a glass of wine. The offering ranges from classic Swedish dishes to international cuisine, with well-loved venues such as Kajutan Saluhallen, focusing on fish and seafood; the wine bar Bar Bulot; the bistro Salut; sandwich shop Hasselssons Macklucka; Gothenburg’s local winery Wine Mechanics; the gelato café Gelaterian; and many more.
