What makes a city LGBTQI friendly? A wide range of queer bars and clubs, a unique LGBTQI council, rainbow coloured streets and trams or an open atmosphere?

Sweden in general is considered a very LGBT+ friendly destination – we were ranked the safest country in the world in the 2019 LGBTQ+ Danger Index. But perhaps it’s the combination of all these things that makes Gothenburg stand out, even here, among the LGBT+ community’s favourites. The non-profit organisation RFSL has named it the best LGBT+ city in Sweden, and the British LGBT Awards put it among it top 10 LGBT+ destinations.

West Pride and the rainbow coloured city

Gothenburg’s own pride festival West Pride has been around since 2007. The festival takes place in June every year and boasts hundreds of events, with the Rainbow parade as a given highlight.

– West Pride makes Gothenburg an even more open and inclusive city. The festival highlights LGBTQI persons’ lives through a norm critical approach to arts and culture, says Emma Percival at West Pride.

During the two weeks leading up to West Pride, all of Gothenburg sports rainbow colours on flags, trams, and more. The square Gustaf Adolfs torg is filled with the city’s own rainbow flags, and many comapnies and organisations join in the celebrations.

The LGBTQI+monument “Gläntan”

The monument Gläntan, located at Esperantoplatsen in central Gothenburg, consists of several components that highlight different times and places. It is based on shared collective experiences from Gothenburg’s LGBTQI+ history. The monument was created by artist Conny Karlsson Lundgren and represents the struggle for equal rights for LGBTQI+ people in Gothenburg—historically, today, and in the future. Homophobiatherapy – a self-help therapy against trans-, bi- and homophobia

In 2019, West Pride launchef the initiative Homophobiarherapy – a self-help therapy in eight steps based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to counteract homo-, bi- and transphobia. Listen to the eigth steps on Spotify.

Meeting places, communities and networks

Regnbågshuset – a meeting place for LGBTQI people in Gothenburg. The activities are created by, with and for the LGBTQI community and offer a space for connection, engagement, socialising, sharing information and creative expression. Visiting and using the different rooms in the venue is free of charge.

Checkpoint Gothenburg – HIV testing with quick results. Anonymous and free for men who have sex with men and for trans people.

PG Väst – Positiva Gruppen Väst is a meeting place for people affected by HIV, with a focus on support and rights.

GIA – Gays in Angered is a safe and protected space for LGBTQ+ young people aged 13–25.

Norma.gbg – organises activities for people aged 13–19 who identify as LGBTQI+ or who are exploring their sexuality or gender identity.

Events & Activities

West Pride is a non-profit organisation. In 2007, they held their first Pride festival, which has since taken place annually. In addition, they run activities throughout the year, offering, among other things, LGBTQI training and certification for schools and organisations in Västra Götaland.
They also create meeting places and platforms for dialogue and reflection on LGBTQI issues.

Guerilla Queer Bar – is a local version of the global “bar takeover” movement, where LGBTQ+ people discreetly transform a traditionally non-queer bar into a queer-friendly social space – without asking for permission. In Gothenburg, GQB is organised monthly, usually on the second Friday, through a secret Facebook group.

Wine Mechanics Slakthuset proudly claims the title of Gothenburg’s first urban winery.
