Warm up at Bar Robusta

Bar Robusta, a lively Italian restaurant a few steps from Slottsskogen, is the ideal place to start your festival days. Their Aperol Spritz parties are almost as much a tradition as the festival itself, and a nice getaway when you need a break from the big crowds and scenes.

Don’t miss the key player

Kendrick Lamar is probably a lot of people’s main reason to buy a Way Out West ticket this year. With “King” Kendrick’s seven Grammys and the soundtrack to Marvel’s success Black Panther under the belt, it’s not hard to understand why. The hiphop star’s latest show in Sweden sold out in three minutes, so if you missed him then – here’s your chance!

Discover some rising stars

No matter what music genre you’re into, there is something for you on the line-up. For instance, check out Swedish rappers Ozzy and Fricky, South London popstar Raye, Spanish dancehall queen Bad Gyal and Norwegian electro-pop trio Sassy 009.

Have a “Smålandsrulle”

This delicious festival classic, made of freshly baked Swedish flatbread, mashed chickpeas, sprouts, cheese and onion, fits neatly into Way Out West’s vegetarian profile. Plus, it’s easy to eat without ruining your festival outfit!

Relax with a film

Since 2011, films are a part of the festival program, in Slottsskogen as well as other venues in town. This year you don’t want to miss the praised documentary Matangi / Maya / M.I.A. that relates the artist’s journey from refugee to super star. Wild Dogs highlights the situation for women and transgenders in a music industry dominated by men, and Cannes-award winning Gräns premieres in Sweden the last day of the festival.

Dance your shoes off in Dungen

The area Dungen is like a festival within the festival. Turn right after the entrance, enter the dreamy atmosphere among the trees and dance away to the tunes of house legend Moodymann, rising star Yaeji, deep house guru Baba Stiltz and many more.

Be inspired at Höjden

Experts, journalists, artists and creatives gather at WOW Talks to discuss everything from the power of words to fake news and government transparency. Among the speakers you’ll find whistleblower Chelsea E Manning, writer Jonas Hassen Khemiri, hiphop artist Ozzy, journalist Greta Thurfjell and the podcast Raseriet (who will make a live podcast on stage). Have a seat and find some inspiration!

Save some energy for the afterhours

Plan ahead, or just go with the flow, it’s up to you! But when the last encore fades in Slottsskogen, there’s still a lot to see and experience at Stay Out West and beyond. Expect massive queues at the smaller venues in town and keep track in the festival app for your absolute must-sees. Bananpiren though, across the bridge on the island of Hisingen, has room for everyone. Fancy an afterparty? Ask around, there’s a lot going on outside the festival areas this weekend.
