Christmas at Liseberg – open till January 7
The Christmas season at the amusement park Liseberg is a highlight for many. It opens on November 18 and lasts until January 7, 2024.
This year, visitors can experience the entirely new themed area, the Winter Market, and an anniversary exhibition about Liseberg’s 100-year history. The Winter Market consists of 19 new market stalls, ice skating rink, and a new snow-covered mountain.
Also, don’t miss visiting the area ‘Tomtebyn.’ The elves welcome you to the happiest village you can imagine, with lots of fun things to discover: magical doors, playful rhymes, jingling bells, and the elves’ workshop.
Unique winter experience at Gunnebo House
The castle Gunnebo House in Mölndal is a popular destination all year round. This winter, they invite you to the new ‘Winter Lights at Gunnebo,’ which runs from November 17 to January 7. The area around the castle is illuminated by a 1.5 km long trail with light and sound installations. The walk takes about 90 minutes, is suitable for the whole family, and you can purchase hot drinks and other treats along the way.
The Maritime Museum and Aquarium
The Maritime Museum and Aquarium re-opened in late 2022, with a new underground aquarium and all new exhibition areas. The youngest visitors can discover life at sea through learning, play, exploration, and collaboration in the exhibitions Knattegatt (0 to 3-year-olds) and Stora Blå (4 to 10-year-olds).
World-class ice hockey
From December 26 to January 5, 2024, the IIHF World Junior Championship will be held in Gothenburg. It will be a hockey celebration throughout the city as tomorrow’s ice hockey stars gather to compete for gold at the arenas Frölundaborg and Scandinavium!
Games and crafts at the museum
Gothenburg’s many museums offer fun and creative activities during school breaks, often inspired by the ongoing exhibitions. At Gothenburg Museum of Art, the exhibition The Wonderful Coulor is on display, showcasing colourful works by the artist group the Gothenburg Colourists.
The Museum of Gothenburg presents contemporary Christmas elves art by artists including Ernst Billgren, Charlotte Gyllenhammar, and Cooper & Gorfer. And at the Museum of World Culture, the popular exhibition on gaming culture, A World of Games, continues.
Sledding and ice skating
Two classic and popular Christmas activities are sledding and skating! Feeling the wind against your cheeks as you go down the hill is an unbeatable feeling, no matter how old you are. There are slopes to ride sleds down in several places around Gothenburg, often in connection with playgrounds, but we are especially happy to recommend Bragebacken in Slottsskogen city park and Brudarebacken in the nature area Delsjön. Don’t forget to bring your own sled!
At the Winter Market at Christmas at Liseberg, you can lace up your own or rented skates and head out onto the ice skating rink. You can also go ice skating at one of Gothenburg’s public ice rinks, such as Ruddalen. Keep an eye on Ruddalen and other ice rinks’ opening hours here.
Explore Gothenburg both from land and water
With the amphibious bus Ocean Bus, you can experience Gothenburg both from land and water. The bus starts from the Stora Teatern and then takes you on a guided journey around the city and then also down the river. The journey ends where it began. Read more at oceanbus.se.
