The border between indie rock and classical music is explored with the full power of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.
May 21st 2027 marks 30 years since the release of the legendary album OK Computer, considered one of the most important rock albums of all time. Not least because it was a radical departure from the band’s earlier sound. “An album created in a world where the internet had yet to take off, it eerily prefigured the themes of alienation and information overload that everyone would start discussing the minute it did.” (The Guardian).
Here, listeners will find Radiohead’s magnum opus, Paranoid Android, which is musically comparable to Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody.
Now the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra takes on the massive soundscape that is OK Computer. In new arrangements collected by conductor Christoffer Nobin, we hear symphonic interpretations of songs like Paranoid Android, Karma Police and No Surprises. We also travel on through the entire musical spectrum of Radiohead’s world, encountering more hits with roots in indie rock and electronica.
British Radiohead is one of few bands that, for decades, has successfully merged groundbreaking musical evolution with huge hits, sold-out tours and chart-topping songs. In an age of mass-produced rock and pop, the band’s uncompromising artistic approach stands out like a a breath of fresh air.
Radiohead’s experimental approach to sound, form and instrumentation also pushes open the doors to classical music. What began as an indie band from Oxford has now become a creative universe. Guitarist Jonny Greenwood is an established composer of orchestral music and film scores, three times Oscar nominated.
This is a concert for those who love Radiohead in particular and rock music in general, but also for those who appreciate symphonic music – not least with connections to contemporary composers such as Pärt, Penderecki and Messiaen. Creator, artistic director and conductor is Christoffer Nobin, who has previously produced several cross over art productions. Visuals, lights and production by Linus Fellbom, Sweden’s most acclaimed light designer and known for numerous pioneering projects in opera, theatre and dance.
