Överås Castle in Örgryte

It is said that during late nights at Överås Castle in Örgryte, a woman dressed in black can be seen wandering the castle’s long corridors. Confirmed witnesses to this supposed ghost are in any case written down from 1924 until modern times – and all testify to the same thing: creaking footsteps from the attic and stairs, and a black-clad female figure. According to the story, it is the ghost of a woman who committed suicide on the property in the latter part of the 19th century.

The keyhole house at Sveagatan 2

In the grand residential building at the corner of Sveagatan 2 in the neighbourhood of Linnéstaden, also called the “Keyhole House” because of the house’s keyhole-shaped entrance, it is said that a tall, thin man without a head is supposed to haunt. At least if the sign stuck to the facade at the entrance is to be believed. According to the sign, the ghost is the astronomer Arthur Lowell, discoverer of the canals on Mars, who lived in the property during a visit to Gothenburg in 1909.

Hôtel Eggers at Drottningtorget

In addition to being one of Gothenburg’s most historic and city-close hotels, it is also rumored that Hôtel Eggers at the square Drottningtorget is haunted. Specifically, it is supposed to be about room 397 where Ebba Eggers, the hotel’s old liquor cashier and also the wife of the hotel director himself, is said to have been seen long after her death by both cleaning staff and hotel guests.

Gathenhielmska Huset at Stigbergstorget

Gathenhielmska Huset at Stigbergstorget in the neighbourhood of Majorna is a building that was built in the 1740s. Despite the fact that the house is named after the privateer and shipowner Lars Gathenhielm, the house has no connection to him in particular. Lars Gathenhielm died at the age of only 28, about 20 years before the house even began to be built, but despite this, legend has it that it is visited by the Gathenhielm ghost at regular intervals. During dark autumn evenings you should be able to hear horses’ hooves in front of the building – a sign that Lars Gathenhielm is back for a visit.

Old gallows hill in Johanneberg

Behind what is today the Carlanderska hospital in the Johanneberg district, there was once a gallows hill, that is, a place where criminals sentenced to death were executed. Just over a century has passed since the last death penalty was carried out in Sweden, but despite the passage of time you can still see the traces of the execution sites – and with it also those who now haunt there. The old gallows hill in Johanneberg is said to be one of Gothenburg’s most haunted places, which becomes easy to understand if you imagine all the horrors that took place there.
