In the middle of Nolhaga Park in Alingsås stands Nolhaga Slott, recently restored with interiors that take you back to the late 19th century. Step inside to explore exhibitions and recreated period rooms, stop for an ice cream on the ground floor, then head back out into the spacious park. It is an easy day out combining history, fika and plenty of greenery.

Back to 1879

The present-day Nolhaga Slott was built for engineer, politician and writer Theodor Adelsköld, based on designs by Gothenburg architect Adrian Peterson. Strictly speaking, it is a grand patrician villa rather than a castle in the traditional sense – but the name stuck.

Following an extensive restoration from 2022 to 2025, the second and third floors have regained much of the character they had in Adelsköld’s time. Wander through recreated historic interiors and temporary exhibitions, while the ground floor is home to the Triumf ice cream café.

Make a day of Nolhaga

Nolhaga Park has large lawns and walking paths, with plenty more to explore nearby. Visit Nolhaga farm to meet Swedish heritage breeds, head to the modern playground with children of different ages, or continue towards Lake Mjörn, the third-largest lake in Västra Götaland. That makes it easy to add a few more hours outdoors after the castle – especially if younger visitors have had their fill of 19th-century interiors.

Every year, Nolhaga Slott also takes part in the popular Lights in Alingsås festival, when buildings and landmarks around Alingsås are illuminated by Swedish and international lighting designers.

Accessibility

There is a wheelchair lift at the main entrance and a lift inside the building to the exhibition floors. An accessible toilet is located by the entrance. The ice cream café can be reached step-free via a ramp at the rear of the building.

Getting to Nolhaga Slott

From Gothenburg, take the commuter train to Alingsås station. From there, it is just under 1.5 kilometres on foot through central Alingsås and into Nolhaga Park, where the castle sits among the greenery.
