
Åstol – volcanic island with historic fishing village
Åstol is a small, car-free island gem north of Gothenburg, located between the islands Tjörn and Marstrandsön. Here, white wooden houses climb closely together along the cliffs, and the old fishing village has a long history that stretches back to the 18th century. The island is reached by ferry from Rönnäng on Tjörn and during summer it offers a café, smokehouse and gallery. Here you can count on salty swimming in a rock pool and walks through winding alleys.

Marstrand – sailing community with famous fortress
Marstrand, located just 45 minutes north of Gothenburg, is a historic sailing and bathing community spanning the islands of Koön and Marstrandsön. With its pedestrian-friendly cobblestone alleys, beautiful turn-of-the-century houses, Sweden’s largest guest harbour and the impressive 17th-century fortress Carlsten, the island offers a unique combination of culture, nature and maritime tradition. At the very top of Marstrandsön, north of Gothenburg, stands this former military fortification from the 17th century. Today, visitors can explore the site’s history on their own, join guided tours, enjoy a meal in the restaurant, or book an overnight stay at the hotel.

Haga – cosy neighbourhood with cobblestone streets, cafes and classic wooden houses
Haga is one of Gothenburg’s oldest districts and its name comes from the pastures that existed here in the 17th century. Nowadays, Haga’s pedestrian-only cobblestone streets are lined with small cafes and shops scattered among the typical Gothenburg landshövdingehus (small wooden houses). The area has a 19th-century atmosphere and is popular with both tourists and locals. Haga Nygata, the central pedestrian street, offers a wide range of cafes, shops and antique shops.

Haga is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Gothenburg. The pedestrian street Haga Nygata is lined with well-preserved houses, many in the characteristic Gothenburg style called “landshövdingehus” with one floor in brick and the rest in wood. Today they house plenty of independent shops and cafés.

Tjolöholm Slott
Tjolöholm Slott was built in 1898-1904 and is an exciting mix of 16th century English architecture, Arts & Crafts and the most modern innovations of the time. In addition to the castle, the grounds also include a well-preserved workers’ village, castle church, carriage museum, several beautiful gardens and large natural areas with many hiking trails. Guided tours are given at the castle, but you can also discover the castle on your own.

Champagnebaren – well-prepared food and fine drinks in a beautiful setting
Experience one of Gothenburg’s perhaps most beautiful and leafy courtyards in the middle of the city centre. Here you’ll find Champagnebaren, whose basic philosophy since they opened has been that champagne should be good, accessible and unsnobbish. In recent years, the premises have been renovated and the restaurant kitchen has been expanded, which means that they can now focus even more on the food. In terms of food, the restaurant focuses on fish and seafood, and of course also really good champagne and sparkling wine. In the spring and summer, the outdoor seating is filled with food and drink-hungry guests, and sometimes live bands play in the courtyard. During the colder seasons, blankets and patio heaters are available for those who wish to sit outside.

Gunnebo House and Gardens – 18th century history in picturesque surroundings
Gunnebo House and Gardens, located just outside Gothenburg, is one of Northern Europe’s most prominent 18th-century buildings. The castle was built as a summer residence for merchant John Hall and was designed by city architect Carl Wilhelm Carlberg. Surrounded by lush forests and carefully tended gardens, Gunnebo offers guided tours, organic food at Gunnebo Kaffehus och Krog, and a castle shop with local crafts. The facility is open year-round and offers a wide range of events.

Rörö – unique nature experiences in the northernmost archipelago
Rörö is the northernmost island in the Gothenburg archipelago and offers a unique nature experience with its open heathlands and nature reserve. The island is particularly popular with hikers and birdwatchers thanks to its well-preserved paths and rich bird life. The harbour area and guest harbour are bustling with life in the summer with plenty of nice natural harbours and sandy beaches. About 500 meters from the guest harbour you’ll find a child-friendly swimming area at Ersvik. The guest harbour has sea kayak rentals, a grocery store, barbecue area, tennis court and boules court. In the summer you can enjoy fantastic gelato at Röröboa.

Gothenburg Botanical Garden – one of the world’s foremost with over 20,000 plant species
The Gothenburg Botanical Garden is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Western Sweden, with over half a million visitors annually. There are over 20,000 plant species from 130 countries, distributed in environments such as the Klippträdgården, Örtagården and Japandalen. The area has a café, shop, exhibitions and a rich programme, and the entrance fee is voluntary.

The Gothenburg Botanical Garden is one of Europe’s largest and most important botanical gardens, with 20,000 unique plants and world-class garden areas. With its exhibitions, programs, café and shop, the garden is one of West Sweden’s most popular visitor attractions.

Pilane sculpture park– monumental works of art in a beautiful natural landscape
Pilane sculpture park on Tjörn offers an art experience in a Bohuslän cultural landscape. Since 2007, the park has presented sculptures by world-leading artists every summer. The exhibition is located in a living landscape where visitors can move freely among grazing sheep and well-trodden paths. One of the highlights is the iconic work Anna by Jaume Plensa. The park is open seasonally from May to September.

Sculpture in Pilande is an art experience set in the middle of a Swedish cultural landscape. The sculpture exhibition among grazing sheep is considered as one of Europe’s foremost, with new works presented each year alongside the park’s permanent sculptures.

Skansen Kronan – historic fortress and viewpoint
Skansen Kronan is a historic fortress located on a hill in the area around Haga and Linné in Gothenburg. The fortress was built between 1687 and 1700 and was then equipped with 23 cannons, but was never involved in combat. During the 19th century, it served as a prison and later as emergency housing. In the 20th century, it functioned as a military museum. Today, Skansen Kronan is used for weddings, parties, conferences and Christmas parties in the unique Cannon Hall, with panoramic views of Gothenburg. In the summer, the area around the fortress is a popular excursion destination, perfect for a picnic with one of Gothenburg’s best views.
