There’s plenty to see, do and discover in Majorna. It is a geographically large district that includes areas such as Stigberget, where there are many concert venues and restaurants, and the historical Klippan area by the river Göta älv. Have a look in one of the many independent shops, selling everything from designer goods to rare LP records. You won’t go hungry either; there are several exciting restaurants and bars to try.

Majorna has a large selection of vintage shops. Between the tram stops Stigbergstorget and Majvallen there are several shops in a row: Patinaverket with a focus on retro furnishings and gadgets and Lilla Patinaverket with clothes and accessories, GBG Deco offers selected design and classic vintage furniture, Also stop by Porslinspojken, that sells Scandinavian porcelain, ceramics and glass and Fabriken which has carefully selected vintage furniture and interior design items from 1900 onwards.

Around the square Mariaplan there are also vintage shops. Välkommen åter and Majornas saker från förr have a large turnover of selected interior design and furniture (so they are worth checking out often). Skivhallen Majorna is a vinyl record shop with a wide range of rare and classic albums. The small shop Hos oss sells a carefully curated selection of interior design, clothing, furniture and lighting and Dukat bord on the street Kungsladugårdsgatan, is a shop with glass, porcelain, interior design, and cooking utensils.

All the shops are run in a small-scale way, and have varying opening hours, so check there websites and social media channels before you head out.

The bakery Cum Pane from the outside. — Artisanal sourdough bread is very popular at the bakery Cum Pane.

Swedish Fika at cosy cafés

A traditional Swedish ”fika” is a must when visiting Gothenburg, and if you happen to be in Majorna you have plenty of cafés to choose from. Cum Pane offers sourdough deliciousness sure to please even pickiest of hipsters. Here you can buy bread and buns to take out or sit down for a coffee break.

Kafé Gapet on Älvsborgsgatan is a day-time open café in Majorna, loved by the locals.

A short distance away on the street Mariagatan is the cosy Kafé Marmelad, which in addition to coffee and pastries also serves artisanal soft serve ice cream and hearty sandwiches. Also on Mariagatan is the café Matería, which has a large and sunny outdoor terrace where you can enjoy specialty coffee, healthy “fika” and simple lunch dishes. If you take a turn down the street Älvsborgsgatan you will find the trendy Kafé Gapet, which has vegetarian and seasonal dishes on the menu. Further down on the same street, the cafe Me and the Goat shares premises with the urban commercial garden Växtverket. Me and the goat is open on weekends and serves, among other things, a sumptuous breakfast buffet

The area surrounding the square Mariaplan keeps growing with exciting restaurants being added continuously. A local favourite is the Italian restaurant Enoteca Maglia, and its adjacent wine bar Vini e Liquori. Looking for natural wines and tapas? Head to Tapasbaren, further down Mariagatan.

Hasselson serves street food dishes like fish n’ chips and moules frites.

Hasselsson is a popular restaurant that serves street food style fish and seafood – like their take on fish n’ chips and mussels with parmesan-covered fries. A little further up Mariagatan is the Hermanos taco kiosk with a selection of different tacos, “dirty fries” and Mexican dishes. Paradiset Mariaplan is a spin-off from Paradiset on Saltholmen, and here too you will find good pizzas and small dishes.

Luckan’s Fish & Seafood at Mariaplan is a combined lunch restaurant and seafood shop. Opposite is the farm shop Gudagott, which has locally produced cured meats and cheeses. Saluhallen Majorna is a small and charming delicatessen with everything for a weekend treat: artisan chips, exciting drinks, cheese, and chocolate.

Gringo coffee roastery has a shop and coffee bar in Majorna.

If you head a little west to Sandarna, you will find the local coffee roaster Gringo Nordic, which has a shop and coffee bar at Varholmsgatan 12. Here you can find their range of artisanal coffee and you can participate in free coffee tastings. It is open weekdays during the day and some Saturdays, read more on their website.

On the same street is the craft brewery Beerbliotek‘s tap room. Beerbliotek brews most of its beers only once and they have several hundred numbered varieties of canned beer. Their tap room is open Fridays and Saturdays, and dogs are welcome!

Finally, no guide to Majorna is complete without mentioning the iconic sausage stand Korv kiosk and the community pool “Plaskis”. Korv kiosk is very popular spot – both for its classic Swedish street food and for its well-photographed sign.

The nearly 100-year-old community pool “Plaskis” is actually called Älvsborgsdammen and is a popular swimming facility at Mariaplan. The pool is filled with water 10-12 weeks a year, around the same time as the summer holidays. The rest of the time it is used as a skate park for children, young people, and adults.
